Five-year-old Jack started having seizures when he was a baby. At the age of two
Jack was diagnosed with intractable epilepsy, which is a type of
epilepsy that does not respond to medication.
Unfortunately, Jack started experiencing several daily seizures, with some lasting as long as
fifteen minutes, which took a toll on his young body. Aggressive treatment at SickKids became
necessary and Jack has now bravely learned how to swallow nineteen pills a day and also follows
a rigid Ketogenic Diet, which requires him, in part, to not eat sugary foods like cookies, candy
or birthday cake and to test his own blood sugar. He has also endured many ambulance rides,
numerous hospitals stays and dozens of invasive procedures.
Jack is currently being evaluated for brain surgery by his outstanding
team at SickKids, which consists of doctors, nurses, technicians, a dietician, a social worker,
child life specialists and researchers.
Despite Jack's medical challenges, he remains a happy, loving boy with a mischievous grin and
still looks forward to his frequent visits at SickKids. He is learning to read in senior
kindergarten and recently taught his little brother how to walk.
One day while at SickKids, Jack became concerned about a sick child he
saw in the hallway and became determined to help his friends at the hospital get better. He came
up with the idea to build a lemonade stand to raise some loose change. Jack and his dad
went off to Home Depot to get the supplies and spent the next three weekends building the
lemonade stand.
The day of the event arrived and hundreds of Oakville residents came out to support Jack's
efforts. Special guests included Oakville Mayor Rob Burton, the Oakville Fire Department,
Halton EMS, and Toronto Argonaut Orlondo Steinauer. What started out as an idea to raise
pocket change for the hospital resulted in a community coming
together and raising over $14,000!
As a world-leader in the treatment of his condition, SickKids continues to help Jack live
life to his fullest potential. He has become a leader in his community and is inspiring thousands
of school children to get involved. Jack recently received the “Kids Believe in SickKids
Spirit Award” and has now been made an ambassador for the hospital.
Please help Jack's mission to make sick kids better, one cup at a time!

“Epilepsy is the most common neurological disorder of children. One out of 100 children has epilepsy and at any moment the child can be seized. One day, seizures seized Jack. He decided to seize them back. At SickKids we work day and night on ways to cure epilepsy, and we are making headway. Please help us help Jack seize his life back”
